It was a strange Christmas eve yesterday. I left the Mayo Clinic for my hotel around 7 pm. I went for a brief walk, and looked for a place to eat but there wasn’t’ much open. I wasn’t really that hungry anyway.
I decided to go back to my room and read (I know, very sad). By the way, I’m reading Darren Brown’s Tricks of The Mind. I think I went to bed at around 11.
Anyway, this morning I went for a workout in the gym, in the hotel basement. After I was done I entered the changing room in the swimming pool area.
As I was washing my hands I heard an voice saying “hi! How’s it going?” It was a friendly, elderly man (mid to late 70′s) standing naked by the shower waiting for it to get warm.
“Good thanks!” I replied as I dried my hands and was getting ready to leave. “Where are you from?” he added enthusiastically. I really don’t wanna do this right now I thought. I was in a rush to change and get to the clinic. “From Bahrain” I said.
“It’s in the Middle East” I added. “Where are you from” I then asked. “Oh I’m from Rochester.” he said. “What’s brings you here?” he added. “The Mayo Clinic” I replied, trying to make my body language show that I’m in a rush.
“Oh you know the Mayo Clinic is closed today. But there are other things you can do today you know…” He then proceeded for about 7 or 8 minutes to explain what my entertainment options were! All the while standing naked by the shower.
“You can go to the Veteran’s Memorial where they have an event… or you can go to the public library… walk on Broadway, keep on going for two blocks and turn left, enter the church and go to the second floor… go to the the cafe there… or you could also…”
He just kept going on and on. I can’t believe how nice he was. Admittedly I was a bit annoyed that he hijacked my time like that, but forgivable.
When he paused I thanked him sincerely and went on my way. I’m working hard on getting the image of his naked body out of my mind…
